Condolences
David Marks - 3rd Ear Music Music and Archive Director April 16, 2009

So sad and sorry to hear that "a mighty tree has fallen...." Condolences from David and Fran Marks. I had the pleasure and privilege of mixing many a road-show, concert and club that Bez graced.... in fact (Pete & Hennie, note) - somewhere in our Hidden Years Music Archive (now stored at SAMRO in Johannesburg) there would have some of those desk mixes; certainly with Hennie's Big Band from the 70's. Peace!

Art de Villiers guitarist - Canada April 13, 2009

I've always had warm feelings for Bez. Just recently I asked Hennie B. about him.

He's one I remember vividly, since we worked together many times (1966-69) in Jo'burg.

He was a fine musician, a gentle & humourous man who sweetened my stay in SA.

We'll meet again.

Art de Villiers (guitarist)

My request to Jack Lea four short months ago, was that Bez Martin and his Big Band play at my Birthday Party, or there would be no party!!  Bez, you gave me the party of my dreams and for that I will be eternally grateful.  I have the most wonderful memories of that night!!  You and your fabulous band played your hearts out for us, and my 50th will be long-remembered by everyone.  The music world is a poorer place without you.  You are a legend in your time.  My sincere condolences to your family.
Jack and Shirley Lea Brother in Law April 13, 2009

The sound of the sax will always remind me of you, Bez.  Your contribution to music in South Africa is legendary.  My greatest pleasure was to listen to your Big Band at Cheryl's 50th Birthday in January this year.  It was a night remembered by all.  Farewell Old Swaer.

Bez, your dedication to music should inspire any young musician.  It's been a pleasure knowing you, and your incredible talent will be remebered always.  Sincere condolences to all the Family.  Love Shirley.

Glenda from your "niece" April 13, 2009

I have very happy memories of my childhood, listening to your band  at the playhouse theatre after movies, when you lived in Durban, and everytime we visited you and Aunty Bella so generous and welcoming, the nieces and nephews always wanted to stay with you.  We were especially priviliged to have you join us in Australia  at Paulas wedding, you made the occasion unique and unforgettable.  I too remember your other hobby, fishing...  You were a wonderful father and husband, all your children and descendants are loving and caring.  We had a wonderful time with you all when we visited Australia, when we last hugged and watched a game of cricket with you.  Goodbye Uncle Bez, you will always be in our hearts and fond memories.  Say hello to Mona and Bob for mexxxooo

Aunty Bella, Caron, Susan, Lynn and Peter John and your families, we love you and can feel the love and comfort you are giving to each other, we are with you in spirit...xxxxxooo

It is with my deepest sympathy that I write this. Words cannot express how sorry I am for your loss. He was an amazing man and I am glad I had a chance and honor to meet him.
Remember his memory always lives on and so does the man that he was. Be strong and appreciate every day for him. Give your mother a big hug. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers.
All my love,
Steve

Uncle Bez, thank you for the good memories and the patience you offered a young boy who, many years ago, just wanted to go fishing with you at every opportunity.  Memories of time spent next to the water's edge with you and Peter are still with me today.  Aunty Bell, Caron, Susan, Lynn and Peter you are all in my thoughts and prayers during this sad time - Love Brian.

Memories come flooding back, the loss of my Dad at 14 and working many a day with Bez in the 80's at the SABC studios, in fact I wrote 5 original tracks for Bez on which he played tenor sax and flute, it was lots of fun. A patient, calm and nice man. I wish you all Gods peace and blessings. Bez is now in the hands of the Creator, what better place is there to be. Keith and Julia.
